About IRIS

A DMS solution for Android devices

IRIS is a Driver State Monitoring Android application, which aims at providing a real-time monitoring and assessment of the drowsiness and inattention level of a driver.
According to the World Health Organization, approximately 1.3 million people lose their life on the road, while 20 to 50 million people suffer non-fatal injuries. Several studies, covering a period of at least four decades reveal that one of the major contributors to those accidents is the driver’s inattention and distraction, usually caused by objects inside (i.e. mobile, navigation/multimedia system etc.) and outside the car (i.e. billboards). To this end, IRIS goal is to:

  • Present an easy to use on-device DMS solution
  • Give the necessary feedback to the driver

IRIS aims at providing a real-time monitoring and assessment of the drowsiness and inattention level of a driver.
The application utilizes the front camera of a smartphone in order to continuously monitor the driver during the driving session and exploits on device machine learning algorithms in order to estimate his/her fatigue and inattention levels through three main variables: i) eye tracking, ii) yawning and iii) head pose.
